QOV Ottawa Fall Bee

QOV Ottawa Fall Bee

Saturday November 9, 2019  9:00 – 4:00

Orleans United Church

1111 Orleans Blvd.

Bring your sewing machine and your lunch.  We will have a table for hand-stitching of binding and labels. We will have kits to sign out for quilt tops and we will have quilt sets ready for quilting.

There will be a garage sale onsite. This year, Marian Rickey will be the ring-master of the garage sale.  We need your saleable items (the “what-was-I -thinking” fabric, the ‘organizers’ that you are too organized to need, the third duplicate tool, ….). Items can be quilting related, but don’t have to be.  Please contact Marian to arrange a time to get the items to her well before the garage sale so that everything can be priced and organized: rickeyem@rogers.com.

This year we thought we would set a challenge for ourselves: how many quilt tops can we build in a day?  Robbie will have the directions for the CQA 2020 QOVC Block for us all to complete. We will bring some fabric for this, but if you could bring along some 2 1/2″ strips of red and/or white that will help us build more quilts.

If you are planning to attend, please register for the Fall Bee by filling out this form: https://forms.gle/95EovQbG3wgUut1e7

Keep your sewing machines humming!

First of all, thanks to all the sewists who came out on Monday to stitch the “Homeward Path” blocks.  We completed enough blocks for 1 1/2 quilts and a few ladies took home extras so that we can finish up a second top next month.  If you want to dig into your stash to add a couple of blocks to bring to the next meeting, the pattern will be added to the patterns section on this blog (it is a good stash buster for those leftover 2 1/2″ squares).  On Monday, Donna Easter joined us to present a quilt to Julie Roberge, who shared some of her stories with us.  Julie was first introduced to QOVC at the Tay River Centre in Perth, where she slept under a quilt made by Donna.  In the afternoon, we presented a quilt to Bonnie Sadler who came with her daughter.  She was completely in awe of the quilt she received (thank you Susan Jensen!).  We had new and familiar members join our merry band.

Next month, we will again meet in room 118 at Confederation Education Centre on Wednesday October 16 from 9:30 – 3:30.  We will have a new block and a new design to explore.

Registration will start soon for the Annual Fall Quilt Bee to be held from 9:30 to 3:30 at Orleans United Church.  We will have a garage sale and you can contact Marian Rickey (rickeyem@rogers.com) to drop off items (sewing related or not!).  We will have a number of kits to sign out, some familiar patterns and some new ones. Please register so that we know how many sewing machines we need to prepare for!

Speaking of kits, we have used a lot of our stash of donated fabrics and while we still have more, we are running short of blenders.  If you have yardage of creams, or whites, or other calm background fabrics, that you are no longer appreciating, our stash is getting hungry and would happily accept your donations.

Happy Sewing Everyone! Thank you for all you do to support Quilts of Valour.

Return of the Sew-Day!

Hey All!  Are you ready to re-convene for our next sew-day?

On Monday September 9 from 9:30 to 3:30 in room 118 of Confederation Education Centre (1645 Woodroffe Ave), we will be putting together a new block and new quilt tops.  If you have some extra 2 1/2″ wide strips of white, please bring them along; we will bring the bulk of the needed fabrics.

You will need a sewing machine and basic accessories (scissors, threads, seam-rippers?); there is an ironing station and cutting station in the room. You can bring your lunch; there is a fridge and microwave in the room. We will have coffee and tea supplies.

If you are new to quilting, or if you are experienced, you are welcome to join us. This month’s block is pretty easy and it will come together in a fun quilt.  We are looking forward to saying hello again to all returning sewists and welcoming the newbies.
